Prague Jazz Club Night

About

Prague has a serious, long-running jazz scene — cheaper than Vienna opera and open every night including Mondays/Tuesdays when the opera houses are dark. Picked as the evening culture alternative since no opera is scheduled at the National Theatre / Estates Theatre / State Opera on May 25-26 (your Prague window).

TIMING: Best for Mon May 25 or Tue May 26 evening (~20:00-23:00). Shows usually start 21:00, doors 20:30.

TOP CLUB OPTIONS:

  1. AghaRTA Jazz Centrum (Železná 16, Old Town)

    • Most famous, intimate cellar venue
    • Right between Old Town Square and Estates Theatre
    • Tickets ~250-350 CZK (€10-14), pay at door
    • Shows daily 21:00
    • aghartajazz.cz
  2. Reduta Jazz Club (Národní 20)

    • Oldest jazz club in Prague (since 1958), Bill Clinton famously played sax here
    • Larger, more "historic venue" feel
    • Tickets ~400-500 CZK (€16-20)
    • reduta.cz
  3. Jazz Dock (Janáčkovo nábřeží 2)

    • Modern, on the Vltava river (floating venue)
    • Younger crowd, more contemporary/fusion
    • Tickets ~250-400 CZK
    • jazzdock.cz
  4. U Malého Glena (Karmelitská 23, Malá Strana)

    • Tiny basement under a pub, super local feel
    • Cheapest (~200 CZK / €8)
    • umalehoglena.cz

PICK FOR FIRST-TIMERS: AghaRTA — central, atmospheric, walkable from most accommodations, world-class musicians most nights. Check their calendar the day before, pick a show that sounds good.

WHAT TO DO: arrive 20:30, grab a drink, get a table or stool. Show is typically 2 sets with a break. Drinks priced normally (beer ~80 CZK / €3). Cash works everywhere, most also take card.

DRESS: casual, no code.

WHY NOT OPERA: National Theatre, State Opera, and Estates Theatre all have nothing scheduled May 25-26 (Mondays/Tuesdays are dark days in Prague). Don Giovanni at Estates Theatre — the bucket-list Mozart venue — isn't running these dates. File for next Prague trip.

ALTERNATIVE EVENING CULTURE (if jazz isn't the mood):

  • Mozart/Vivaldi tourist concerts in historic churches (St. Nicholas, Spanish Synagogue) — 1 hour, €20-40, every night
  • Black Light Theatre — uniquely Czech, every night
  • Just a Vltava sunset walk + beer on Náplavka riverside
