Travel insurance — 2026-2027

Plan
@yancou30

Decide on travel medical / trip insurance for the May 18 – June 7 Eurotrip B (21 days, Montréal-based, age 46).

Critical context:

  • Current card: Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite — travel medical only covers first 15 days under 65 → DAYS 16–21 ARE UNCOVERED without action
  • No FX-fee card yet (Momentum charges 2.5%)
  • Multi-country: Spain (Palma) → Austria (Vienna) → Czechia (Prague) → Albania (Tirana)
  • Includes one motorcycle day in Mallorca (May 22) — moto activities are a grey zone for most travel medical policies

Decisions to make:

  1. Short-term single-trip top-up to cover days 16–21 (cheapest fix) OR
  2. Full single-trip policy that covers all 21 days (replaces Momentum's medical entirely, simpler claims) OR
  3. Annual multi-trip policy if more travel is planned in 2026

What to look for:

  • Confirm coverage for recreational motorcycling (NOT racing/track)
  • $1M+ emergency medical
  • No pre-existing condition gotchas
  • Spain, Austria, Czechia, Albania all in covered region
  • Direct-billing to hospitals abroad (vs reimbursement-only)
  • 24/7 multilingual assistance line

Providers to compare:

  • Scotia Travel Insurance (extension to existing Momentum coverage — simplest)
  • Manulife CoverMe Single-Trip
  • Blue Cross Quebec
  • SoNomad
  • Allianz Global Assistance
  • World Nomads (motorsports-friendly)
  • RBC Insurance
  • TuGo

Urgency: Departing May 18 — buy BEFORE leaving Canada (most policies require this).
